Project Title: Cedar Creek Biofuel Study—Groundwater Implications Soil sampling the research plots. The overall objective of the USGS portion of this study is to better understand the fate and transport of veterinary pharmaceuticals and nutrients through the unsaturated zone and to the water table beneath diverse prairie grasses, corn, and hay plant communities. Progress during FY10—The soil hydrology assessment is presented in the project chief's master's thesis: (Trost, J. "Effects of perennial and annual vegetation on a soil water balance and groundwater recharge." M.S. Thesis, University of Minnesota, 2010). A USGS report will be produced for the cooperator which will report the pharmaceutical fate and transport assessment. Most of the chemical analyses necessary for assessing the pharmaceutical fate and transport were completed. A database of the pharmaceutical data has been created and continues to be updated. The cooperator continues to minimally maintain the experimental plots and collect biofuel, hydrologic and water quality (for nitrogen, not for pharmaceuticals) data independent of USGS involvement.
