Synoptic StudiesSynoptic studies are short-term investigations of water chemistry and aquatic communities during selected seasonal periods or hydrologic conditions. These studies expand spatial coverage of water-quality conditions beyond fixed site sampling. Sampling for three synoptic studies (snowmelt, agricultural, and urban studies) was completed in 1997. The purpose of the snowmelt synoptic study was to characterize nutrient and sediment concentrations during the high streamflow associated with the melting snow in the study unit. The purpose of the agricultural synoptic study (which was done in association with the Eastern Iowa and Lower Illinois study units) was to evaluate the effects of wooded riparian cover on water quality and aquatic biota. The purpose of the urban synoptic study was to characterize nutrient, sediment, and pesticide concentrations during summer low-flow conditions in streams in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
