Objective: The objective of the Urban Synoptic Study was to detremine if water quality indicators (water chemistry and biological community characteristics) were associated with measures of urbanization such as population density, percent urban land use and percent impervious surface within the basin upstream of the sampling area. Background:Consequences of stream modifications in urban areas include increased water temperatures, more rapid changes in stream depth and flow due to increased impervious surface, inputs of point and nonpoint discharges of contaminants from road surfaces and vehicle emissions, and degradation of habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms. Approach:Wadeable warm water streams in the Twin cities Metropolitan area with basin areas less than 150 square miles were considered for evaluation. Final site selection was based on the percentage of urbanization in each basin. Streams were selected along a gradient from low to high percent urbanization within each basin. During September 1997, water sampling, discharge measurements, fish and invertebrate collections, and habitat characterizations were accomplished.
