Ecological Fixed Site AssessmentsFixed site assessments are the primary source of information for assessing the conditions of aquatic communities in streams in the Upper Mississippi River Basin study unit. Biological communities and habitat are characterized at all sites. Biological communities and habitat characteristics are described within a stream reach that is collocated with a Surface-Water Basic Fixed Site where chemical and hydrologic data are collected. There are 11 Basic-Fixed Ecological sites. Six sites are within basins that are relatively small (100-500 square miles) and homogeneous with respect to glacial lobe provenance, surficial geology, and land use. These sites are generally first or second-order streams that are relatively narrow (15-30 feet wide) and shallow (1-3 feet deep). There are seven sites within larger basins (greater than 500 square miles) that are relatively heterogeneous with respect to glacial lobe provenance, surficial geology, and land use. These sites are 30-2,000 feet wide and 8-25 feet deep. For pictures of data collection see the links below:Collection Methods (all collections are made with nationally consistent protocols) |
