Project Title: Emerging Contaminants in Shallow Groundwater in Minnesota, 2009 - 2010
Project Number: NQ00DY6 - MN 259
Project Chief: Erickson, Melinda
Project Start Date: September 2009
Project End Date: September 2012
Cooperator: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Objectives:
Determine the magnitude of contamination from emerging contaminants of interest in shallow groundwater in Minnesota. Emerging contaminants in this study include organic waste water compounds, pharmaceutical compounds, antibiotics, and endocrine active compounds (hormones). Relate the results to point and non-point sources or land use that mayexplain the occurrence and distribution of the compounds in shallow groundwater
Progress during FY11:
A total of 112 primary and quality control samples were collected from 80 sample locations from October 2009 - June 2011. Results for samples collected prior to July 1, 2010, for the analytical schedules Schedule 1433 (Waste Water Compounds), Schedule 2080 (Human Health Pharmaceuticals) are available online via NWIS and were provided in a spreadsheet to MPCA. A data series report is near completion, and documents the field and laborary methods, and the analyitcal results for the research method Schedule 2434, Hormones in Filtered Water.
Statement of Work FY 12:
The near-final Data Series report, prepared to publish the sample collection methods, analytical methods, quality assurance, and analytical results for the experimental method Schedule 2434, Hormones in Filtered Water, will be finalized and published early in the year. A scientific investigation series report (SIR) will be prepared to publish methods and analytical results, and interpretation of sampling results for samples collected in the 2010 and 2011 field seasons. Another 40 wells are scheduled to sampled in 2012 for the same analytical schedules used over the past two years.
