Red River of the North Basin

River of the North Basin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota -- Framework

Abstract
A synthesis of previous studies is used to describe the environmental setting
of the Red River of the North drainage basin. The environmental setting is
defined by physiography, geology and soils, land and water use, population,
climate, surface-water and ground-water hydrology, and aquatic ecology. These
factors are diverse drainage basinwide and provide a necessary framework for
assessing water quality on a regional scale. The Red River of the North basin
is one of twenty study units began in 1991 under the U.S. Geological Survey's
National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Water, sediment, and aquatic biota
are being sampled and analyzed at different scales to assess water quality
within the context of the environmental setting.
