News and Updates

Nationwide UZIG Meeting in FY2001

At the last general UZIG meeting in Menlo Park in January 1999, we decided to have the next meeting in 2001, perhaps in New Mexico or Minnesota, but other location are also possible. Features of a good site include: convenience for travel, field trips or facility visits of interest. If you have interest in hosting the meeting or choosing the site, please speak up!

Graphical User Interface for Numerical Simulations: VS2DI

The VS2DI graphical software package for simulating fluid flow and solute or energy transport in variably saturated porous media is now available on the USGS HASS web site. This package contains all the tools that a user needs to create, run, and view results for a simulation of flow and transport through variably saturated porous media. The VS2DI package seamlessly integrates a graphical user interface--within which the user can draw the simulated domain and enter or modify model parameters--with existing USGS models of flow and solute transport, and a postprocessor that displays simulation results.

The numerical models used for flow and transport calculations are the U.S. Geological Survey's computer models VS2DT (for water and solute transport) and VS2DH (for water and energy transport). These models have been updated to version 3.0 for implementation in the VS2DI package. VS2DI 1.1 is available from (http://water.usgs.gov/software/).

USGS Activities with the Department of Energy

Doug Duncan has joined the USGS Office of Ground Water as lead liaison between the USGS and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. Ray Wallace, who recently retired, formerly held the position. Doug is responsible for assisting in resolution of issues between DOE and the USGS, identification of technical issues that have the potential for negative impact on the USGS or DOE, and review of technical reports and documents. He will spend one day a week in Reston but will maintain his primary office at DOE in downtown Washington, D.C. Doug has worked as an environmental scientist, as a geophysicist, and as the Hydrology Program Manager for DOE’s Nevada Test Site. He can be reached at (703) 648-5896 or (dduncan@usgs.gov).

Implementation of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the USGS and the DOE will be among Doug’s responsibilities. This MOU provides a framework for jointly operated programs in research, development and demonstration related to the environmental management of sites throughout the DOE complex.

Editor's note: Evoultion of UZIG-News

Starting with this issue, UZIG-News articles are in the form of Word files and .htm links. This allows easy inclusion of figures. For access through UNIX systems, .prn files (similar to Postscript) are included as an alternative.

An additional type of item I would like to see in future issues is a website pointer. The purpose would be to publicize a website of interest to UZIG members. A website concerning an unsaturated zone-related program, project, or other activity serves many of the same purposes that UZIG-News articles serve. A few lines of the newsletter would give readers the URL and a brief description that explains what the website has to offer, who would be interested in it, and what new features may have been recently added. Please send me comments on this idea, and send me the URL’s of websites, your own or someone else’s, that would be of interest to UZIG members. (jrnimmo@usgs.gov).
