Nationwide UZIG Meeting in Idaho Falls, July 30 through August 2

The agenda and other details of the 2001 UZIG meeting are now on the website: http://mn.water.usgs.gov/uzig/meetings.htm Ground-water contamination, recharge of aquifers, and the management of land affected by waste disposal, agriculture, and mining are major topics to be addressed at this biannual meeting. The 2001 meeting is cosponsored by the Department of Energy, Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), and the University of Idaho. About half of the expected 150 participants will be from the USGS, and the remainder from DOE, Universities, and other institutions. The program includes about 80 presentations of research findings and future needs concerning the soil, rock, and other materials between the land surface and the water table. For a sampling, look at the five abstracts attached below. An all-day field trip will visit sites of waste-management and geologic interest at the INEEL.

Selected abstracts for presentations at the 2001 UZIG Meeting:

Evaluation of Moisture-Dependent Anisotropy in Lithified Vadose Zone
	Porous Media
by Kristine E. Baker (BAKEKE@inel.gov) and David N. Thompson

Field Study of Soil Water Flow and Cryptosporidium Transport:
	Watkinsville, Georgia Site
		by Michael Young (michael@dri.edu)

Spatial Variability of Recharge Estimates in the Glassboro Area, New Jersey
by Tom Nolan (btnolan@usgs.gov) and Art Baehr

Spatial Bias in Unsaturated Hydraulic Property Estimates: Origin, Impact,
	and Relevance
		by Robert M. Holt (rmholt@olemiss.edu)

Possible Electromagnetic Techniques for Mapping Interbeds, Permeable
Basalt Zones, and Flow in the UZ at INEEL at Multiple Scales from
High Resolution Borehole Radar to Airborne Electromagnetics
by David L. Wright (dwright@usgs.gov) and Jared D. Abraham

Vadose-Uncertainty Session at GSA Meeting

“Uncertainty in Vadose Zone Flow and Transport Prediction” is a special session organized by Mike Nicholl and Bob Holt at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting, November 5-8, 2001. The abstract deadline is July 24. Details are in the attached call for papers.

Ground-Water Recharge Short Course at GSA Meeting

A one-day short course on methods for estimating ground-water recharge will be offered by Rick Healy and Bridget Scanlon at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting on November 4, 2001. See the attached flyer (recharge.pdf), visit the GSA web site (http://www.geossociety.org/meetings/2001/t-shcrs.htm), or contact Rick (rwhealy@usgs.gov) or Bridget (bridget_scanlon@beg.utexas.edu) for more details.
