1994 UZIG Meeting in Denver, Colorado, October 17, 1994

The Unsaturated-Zone Interest Group held a brief business meeting on Monday, October 17, in the Ramada Inn in Denver. The meeting was attended by approximately 30 people. Because of the short amount of time allocated for the meeting, there were no scientific presentations. Bill Herkelrath presented his ideas about putting together a list of uz equipment currently possessed by UZIG members. Attached below is a brief survey designed to provide Bill with this information. PLEASE take the time to fill it out and return it to Bill by December 15. The value of this survey hinges on broad based participation by all UZIG members. It is hoped that ultimately we can have an on-line list of instruments that would be available for lend/lease among UZIG members and that our instrumentation needs may be met with assistance from the WRD Instrumentation Committee and the Office of Ground Water.

Newell Trask made a presentation about the survey he is conducting for the Office of Ground Water to determine all the current and past WRD projects that have included some aspect of unsaturated-zone hydrology. He discussed his preliminary results and asked for comments. He plans on publishing the survey results as a GW Technical Memo. Preliminary results be distributed to UZIG members for comment. Any comments may be sent directly to Newell by edoc (NJTRASK).

There was much discussion about the feasibility of setting up a NETNEWS continuum for the UZIG. Although both favorable and unfavorable points about this were raised, it was agreed that this was at least worth a try. The continuum has been established. It is named usgs.unsaturated-hydrol. Check it out.

The proposed creation of an Unsaturated-Zone Interest Group newsletter was strongly endorsed by those in attendance. It was agreed that it would be reasonable to try to get an electronic newsletter published on 6 month intervals. The newsletter would contain 2-4 short articles contributed by members as well as any bullet items of general interest. John Nimmo has volunteered to serve as editor for the first edition, which should be out by 1/1/95. It is planned to distribute the newsletter via email to members and also list in the netnews continuum. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to the newsletter should get in touch with John (jrnimmo). Several people have tentatively volunteered to serve as editor at some time in the future. Rob Striegl noted that for the Ecology newsletter, authors were simply selected at random by the editor and told that they must submit an article. It was agreed that this sounded like a good way to encourage participation.

The future of UZIG meetings was discussed in detail. There was strong sentiment to continue them, although probably on a less frequent basis than in the past. Dave Morgan suggested having the meetings at the start of the fiscal year in October. The group agreed with this and planned on having the next general meeting in October, 1995. Both Geoff Delin (Minnesota District) and Terry Rees (California District) volunteered to host that meeting.
