Red River of the North Basin

National Water-Quality Assessment Program

Stoner, J.D., and Lorenz, D.L., 1992, Water Quality Assessment Strategy for the Red River of the North Basin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota: North Dakota Water-Quality Symposium Program Abstracts, March 25-26, 1992, Bismarck, North Dakota, p. 24.

Abstract

The Red River of the North basin, which is mostly agricultural land, is a study unit of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program. Long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to describe the status and trends of the quality of a representative part of the Nation's water resources and to provide a sound understanding of the primary natural and human factors affecting the quality of these water resources. The Red River of the North study began in 1991 with the formation of a liaison committee that has taken an active role in prioritizing water-quality issues in the basin and in planning the study. A review of previous studies and data indicates that the environmental setting is diverse and water quality varies widely throughout the basin. Also, little is known about the quantities of sediment and pesticides in water. Water sediment, and selected biota will be sampled and analyzed at different scales to assess water quality within the context of hydrologic and ecological settings.
